Final breakthrough for the Boßler tunnel

The final tunnel breakthrough of the project Albaufstieg was celebrated on 8 June 2018. The Boßler tunnel is part of the new line construction for the Deutsche Bahn (German Rail) between Wendlingen and Ulm, and is an element of the Stuttgart 21 project.

After the breakthrough of the eastern tube in November 2016, the team of the consortium Tunnel Albaufstieg (ATA), under the lead of PORR, can look forward to another milestone: the breakthrough of the western tube at the Bossler tunnel. Since 2013, a total of 28.3km of tunnel was bore out and constructed. This includes the Steinbühl and the Bossler tunnels. The mechanical tunnelling of the eastern tube of the Boßler tunnel started in April 2015, two years later it was also possible to start with the western tube. In June 2018, according to plan the tunnel boring machine "Kätchen" first saw the light above Filstal near Mühlhausen im Täle , where the tunnels Boßler and Steinbühl connects to the new Fistal bridge. The 85m high railway bridge is the thrid highest in Germany, which is also being built with a participation of PORR.

Possible record-breaking piercing efforts

61,000 lining segments, made from 280,000m³ of concrete and 30,000 tonnes of construction steel, were installed. In addition, the boring team imported 150,000m³ of annular gap backfill through a 9km-long pump line. 15 million truck kilometres were required to dispose of 4.6 million t of tunnel excavation, carted along an up to 10km long haul-age line. In total, trains operated 100,000km of supply missions. Up to 38m of tunnel boring and construction as a daily performance was achieved – possibly a record-breaking advance rate.

More than 400 invited guests attended the celebratory breakthrough, supported by the most modern stage technology. PORR's breakthrough of the Boßler tunnel, thanks to over 6 years of motivation and commitment by the team, set new international benchmarks in tunnel construction.

World premiere in tunnelling

The 17.5km tunnel excavation of this project was rather different from the usual machine-boring operation in terms of technical and contractual implementation. It can therefore be regarded as a world first in tunnel construction.
